The hours that mechanics work will vary from garage to garage.

Most garages will work a standard 40 hour week, Monday to Saturday.It is common to work on weekends, go on emergency call outs and occasionally ‘stay late to get the job done’. If your employer attends breakdowns, you may have to travel long distances, work in all weather conditions and have unpredictable working patterns.

You should get an unpaid lunch break of at least half an hour, you would need to confirm this with your employer as again this varies.

In specialist industries mechanics may work shifts which are normally on a rota basis or they may work solely night shifts in industries where the vehicles are in use throughout the day.
