How Do I Become An MOT Tester?

Once you are fully trained as a mechanic, with experience you can train to become an MOT Tester (also known as a ‘nominated tester’).

To become an MOT Tester you must meet ALL of the following requirements:

You must

  • have a minimum of four years experience repairing the types of vehicles that you wish to test.
  • be at least 20 years of age and sponsored by your testing station.
  • have a full and valid driving licence for the type/class of vehicle that you wish to test.
  • have no ‘unspent’ convictions for criminal offences.
  • have a level 3 qualification in vehicle mechanics (such as NVQ level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or City & Guilds Automotive Maintenance and Repair)

If you satisfy all of the above criteria but do not have the relevant qualification you must pass the VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) Nominated Tester Assessment exam. You will also have to complete a two day VOSA training course which will cover testing procedures and you will have to complete a practical demonstration test.
